Fuel Consumption: 9 Tips

1. Slow down
One of the best ways to save gas is to simply reduce your speed. As speed increases, fuel economy
decreases exponentially. If you one of the “ten-over on the freeway” set, try driving the speed limit for a
few days. You’ll save a lot of fuel and your journey won’t take much longer. (Just be sure you keep to
the right, so you won’t impede the less-enlightened.)
2. Check your tire pressure
Under-inflated tires are one of the most commonly ignored causes of crummy MPG. Tires lose air due to
time (about 1 psi per month) and temperature (1 psi for every 10 degree drop); under-inflated tires have
more rolling resistance, which means you need to burn more gas to keep your car moving. Buy a reliable
tire gauge and check your tires at least once a month. Be sure to check them when they are cold, since
driving the car warms up the tires along with the air inside them, which increases pressure and gives a
falsely high reading. Use the inflation pressures shown in the owner’s manual or on the data plate in the
driver’s door jamb.
3. Check your air filter
A dirty air filter restricts the flow of air into the engine, which harms performance and economy. Air filters
are easy to check and change; remove the filter and hold it up to the sun. If you can’t see light coming through
it, you need a new one. Consider a K&N or similar “permanent” filter which is cleaned rather than changed;
they are much less restrictive than throw-away paper filters, plus they’re better for the environment.
4. Accelerate with care
Jack-rabbit starts are an obvious fuel-waster — but that doesn’t mean you should crawl away from every light.
If you drive an automatic, accelerate moderately so the transmission can shift up into the higher gears.
Stick-shifters should shift early to keep the revs down, but don’t lug the engine — downshift if you need to
accelerate. Keep an eye well down the road for potential slowdowns. If you accelerate to speed then have to
brake right away, that’s wasted fuel.
5. Get back to nature
Consider shutting off the air conditioner, opening the windows and enjoying the breeze. It may be a tad warmer,
but at lower speeds you’ll save fuel. That said, at higher speeds the A/C may be more efficient than the wind
resistance from open windows and sunroof. If I’m going someplace where arriving sweaty and smelly could be
a problem, I bring an extra shirt and leave early so I’ll have time for a quick change.
6. Back off the bling
New wheels and tires may look cool, and they can certainly improve handling. But if they are wider than the
stock tires, chances are they’ll create more rolling resistance and decrease fuel economy. If you upgrade your
wheels and tires, keep the old ones. I have fancy sport rims and aggressive tires on my own car, but I keep the
stock wheels with a good narrower-tread performance tire in the garage. For long road trips, the stock wheels
give a smoother ride and better economy.
7. Clean out your car
If you’re the type who takes a leisurely attitude towards car cleanliness — and I definitely fall into that
category — periodically go through your car and see what can be tossed out or brought into the house. It
doesn’t take much to acquire an extra 40 or 50 lbs. of stuff, and the more weight your car has to lug around,
the more fuel it burns.
8. Downsize
If you’re shopping for a new car, it’s time to re-evaluate how much car you really need. Smaller cars are
inherently more fuel-efficient, and today’s small cars are roomier than ever. Worried about crash protection?
The automakers are designing their small cars to survive crashes with bigger vehicles, and safety features
like side-curtain airbags and electronic stability control are becoming commonplace in smaller cars.

9. Don’t drive

Not a popular thing to say on a car site, I know, but the fact is that if you can avoid driving, you’ll save gas.
Take the train, carpool, and consolidate your shopping trips. Walking or biking is good for your wallet and your
health. And before you get in your car, always ask yourself: “Is this trip really necessary?”

Sun, Moon & Star

"We built seven firm layers above you. We installed a blazing lamp." (Qur'an, 78:12-13)

As we know, the only source of light in the Solar System is the Sun. With advances in technology, astronomers
discovered that the Moon was not a source of light but that it merely reflects the light reaching it from the Sun.
The expression "lamp" in the above verse is a translation of the Arabic word "sirajan," which most perfectly
describes the Sun, the source of light and heat.

In the Qur'an Allah employs different words when referring to such celestial bodies as the Moon, the Sun and
the stars. This is how the differences between the structures of the Sun and Moon are expressed in the Qur'an:

"Do you not see how He created seven heavens in layers, and placed the moon as a light in them and
made the
sun a blazing lamp?" (Qur'an, 71:15-16)

In the above verse, the word "light" is used for the Moon ("nooran" in Arabic) and the word "lamp" for the Sun
("sirajan" in Arabic.) The word used for the Moon refers to a light-reflecting, bright, motionless body. The word
used for the Sun refers to a celestial body which is always burning, a constant source of heat and light.

On the other hand, the word "star" comes from the Arabic root "nejeme," meaning "appearing, emerging, visible."
As in the verse below, stars are also referred to by the word "thaqib," which is used for that which shines and
pierces the darkness with light: self-consuming and burning:

"It is the star that pierces through darkness!" (Qur'an, 86:3)

We now know that the Moon does not emit its own light but reflects that reaching it from the Sun. We also know
that the Sun and stars do emit their own light. These facts were revealed in the Qur'an in an age when mankind
simply did not have the means to make scientific discoveries of their own accord. It was an age when peoples'
knowledge of celestial bodies was severely restricted, to say the least. This further emphasises the miraculous
nature of the book of Islam.

Kalah Takpa, Gaya Mau Ada

The story goes back to 15 years ago, on a nice afternoon, me and 5 other friends were playing "sepak takraw".

At that young age, we hardly utilizes all the 3 steps allowed, known as "botoi", means reply a serve directly on one go.

Looking at us playing is a man who is in his late 20's, physically thin and on a first glance would be normally being labelled a drug-addict.

After watching us playing for a while, he then approached us, and said:
"Kalah Takpa, Gaya Mau Ada" (play in style even if you are losing / will lose).

Then, he quietly stepped back, and continues watching us playing. Then after, knowing that he is watching, we tend to utilizes all the 3 steps allowed. It wasn't that long for us to realize that, in that way, sepak takraw is more fun and it increases the spirit of team work.

Fast forward to 4th of August 2013, when I recall that incident, isn't that we often missed out the opportunity to see the positive side of things happened / happening to us?

Two lessons can be extracted.

1. Taking Advice
In my opinion, to take advice only from someone higher in status and knowledge is a wrong perception. Advice means life experience, and a personal insight. Advice can be given by anybody, either on positive note, or even negative.
Example of negative note:
A chain smoker can give a public awareness talk (a.k.a. advice) on how they became chain smokers.

A wise man once said, "Do not look upon who is saying, rather, look upon (i.e. listen) to what is being said".

2. Excellence
Sometimes, we fail to see the big pictures. We tend to focus too much on winning (or, afraid to lose) that we do not focus on excellence anymore (i.e. in style). It is always the line between winning and losing, or right and wrong. But in reality, the focus should be towards excellence. I strongly believe that, only then, we can be creative and innovative.

The word “excellence” comes from “excel” which means “to be exceptionally good at something”.   Excellence also means “the quality of being extremely good or outstanding”.  It is “the state of excelling; surpassing merit or quality” and “the activity etc. in which a person excels”.

You don't need your laptop. Handphone is enough. Mashaallah Mekah is full of people and some shops open 24hours

1000 riyal is enough for normal usage - 2 person (2-3kg of kurma ajwa, 3-4 jubah, souvenir, snacks and foods)

Do lots of ajr (good deeds) - pass tissue paper, provide / give away water

Learn how to stop people crossing your sujud

Do not bring thing that you can buy there. Keep some space in your luggage. Bring extra hand carry bag, limit is 7kg.

Abaya (jubah perempuan) price is 5-20 dirham cheaper in Mekah - depends on the price. e.g. 100 -> 80. 30->25.

Graduate's Dilemma: Riba' Loan

Summary:

1. Buy a car or a motorbike with monthly installment will result in paying Riba’.

2. Staying with your parents, and commute public transport is the best way not paying Riba’ while having less expenditure

3. Renting a place to stay with friends and buy a car is the highest possible expenditure one will face.
Will result in paying Riba’, and monthly saving is about RM200 only.

4. Some may opt for buy a car (to be used for ‘balik kampung’ and or weekend activities), and buy a motorbike
(daily commute to work). This will result in paying Riba’ as well.

Minimum Expenditure Staying with Parents= RM680;
Total Savings per month= RM2000 – RM680 = RM1320
Annual savings = RM15,840

Minimum Expenditure Staying with friends / Rend a room = RM1160;
Total Savings per month = RM2000 – RM1160 = RM840
Annual savings = RM10,080

Proposed strategy: For Boys

First 6 months to 1 year, commute public transport. Then, if deemed necessary,
buy a motorbike (~RM5,000) with cash.

Annual increment and bonus can be used for other expenses like upgrade hand phone,
laptop, pay back PTPTN, holiday, etc.

Depending either staying with parents or renting a room, minimum saving after 4 years will be RM40,000.
This amount can be used to buy a new car.

I would recommend not to buy a house / apartment in your early career days. Why:

1. monthly payment will be about RM700; this is a Riba’ loan

2. downpayment, lawyer fees, etc, and renovation cost will be about RM60,000.
Some will opt for loan for this as well. Riba’ loan again.

3. no flexibility to venture new job opportunities; far from house, or even another state

4. need to align with your wife’s working place; can easily move to another rental house /apartment
convenient for both of you

Get married only after you’ve bought a car with cash. Remember, this is the most killer expenditure!.
Don’t look for status, rather look for maintainability and practicality.
Proton Saga worth RM40k, and this is sufficient if you want to buy a new car – big space, less fuel consumption.
To buy a second hand car has its own pro and cons.

After marriage, I would recommend that to stay in a rental house / apartment (maximum RM600 a month) until
you have enough cash to buy your dream house with cash.
There is no problem / shame staying in a rental house / apartment.
In Europe, only rich and retired people own a house, the young ones normally will only rent.

With monthly saving of RM1300, After 10 years of your married life, your bank balance alone will be about RM150k.
If your wife is working as well, easily you can afford to buy a house by then.

Be patient, and make your strategy. There is no short cut for success.
Always prepare yourself, avoid taking Riba' loan by any case, and when opportunity knock your door,
you are then ready to take up the challenges, insya'Allah.

Proposed strategy: For Girls

Don't look for a partner that is graduating the same time as you!.
Considering the explanation above, you can make a strategy that your partner is someone that graduated
3-4 years before you, and already bought a car with cash. Smart move is not it?

Immediately after graduation, get married. Then, discuss with your husband about your intention about your career;
whether you prefer to work, or become house wife.
You can now discuss with your husband about renting house / apartment in which area.
Also, if he decide to go oversea to work, you can easily follow him as well.
